PHARMACY TECH I's AND II's - INPATIENT PHARMACY - FULL-TIME - DUKE HOSPITAL PHARMACY

Duke Hospital offers various FULL TIME opportunities in Pharmacy for both Pharmacy Tech I and Pharmacy Tech II positions. 
 
Some experience in a Hospital Setting is preferred.

Understanding of processes for preparing intravenous admixtures or other sterile products (including chemotherapy and parenteral nutrition) is strongly preferred.

Occupational Summary 

Perform under supervision a variety of technical duties related to the preparing and dispensing of drugs according to standard procedures and techniques.

Work Performed 

Pharmacy Tech I:
  • Prepare intravenous admixtures or other sterile products (including chemotherapy and parenteral nutrition). 
  • Fill physician orders/prescriptions, medication carts, or stock requisitions.
  • Deliver medications and supplies to patient care and ancillary areas.
  • Answer telephones and directs calls to appropriate personnel.
  • Enter charges and credits for patient medications.
  • Enter medication orders/prescriptions into the pharmacy computer system.
  • Provide technical support for automated equipment (Pyxis Robotics).
    Maintain logs, records and other required documentation.
  • File documentation in the appropriate location.
  • Complete and document all assigned medication storage area inspections at least monthly.
  • Identify and replace outdated and unusable drugs.
  • Monitor assigned quality improvement indicators of individual or departmental performance.
  • Stock medications and supplies; package medications as required for dispensing.

Pharmacy Tech II:
  • Retrieve and interpret medication orders; perform pharmaceutical calculations, taking into account patient and drug characteristics; enter medication orders into pharmacy computer system for pharmacist's review.
  • Label, fill and deliver medication to appropriate patient care locations.
  • Receive and triage information requests; research and provide information where appropriate; refer other inquiries to pharmacist.
  • Inventory, order, receive and stock drugs and supplies.
  • Retrieve discontinued or expired medications from stock and patient areas; discard or return to stock as appropriate; complete corresponding documentation.
  • Serve as a primary training resource for new technicians and assist in evaluating their progress as directed; may assist in preparing schedules, setting work priorities and making work assignments as directed.
  • Assist in documentation of unit-specific procedures and quality assurance activities under Pharmacist's review.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities 
  • Excellent communication skills, oral and written.
  • Ability to analyze data, perform multiple tasks and work independently.
  • Must be able to develop and maintain professional, service-oriented working relationships with patients, physicians, nurses, co-workers and supervisors.
  • Must be able to understand and comply with policies and procedures. 
  • Ability to compound medications and admix intravenous products including antineoplastic drugs under the supervision of a pharmacist.
  • Ability to work rotating shifts.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Pharmacy Tech I:

Education: High school diploma or equivalent and completion of a certified pharmacy technician training program or acceptance into pharmacy school or two years’ experience acquired on the job 
Experience: N/A
Degrees, Licensures, Certifications: Must be eligible for registry with the NC Board of Pharmacy
 
Pharmacy Tech II: 

Education
Work requires high school or equivalent plus successful completion of a formalized Pharmacy Technician program. 

Experience
Work requires a minimum of two years’ experience as a Pharmacy Technician plus completion of advanced competencies checklist as documented and approved by the Department of Pharmacy. OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE.

Degrees, Licensures, Certifications
Pharmacy Technician certification is required.
