General Description:
Administer and coordinate technical activities in the Immunology Laboratory.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Coordinate the technical activities of personnel to ensure effective technical operation in accordance with established practices.
  • Develop and implement quality control programs to ensure reliability of testing procedures, proper function of laboratory equipment, effectiveness in identifying problems, and compliance with federal and CAP regulations.
  • Assist in conducting proficiency evaluations of laboratory operations through preparation and distribution of unknown specimens or samples and evaluating the accuracy of solicited results.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of testing methods, techniques and procedures for laboratory application. Repatriate tests from reference laboratory if possible.
  • Set up and evaluate new laboratory equipment and make recommendations accordingly.
  • Run all validation for method changes and new assay development.  Run parallel samples, analyze sample data, and prepare data reports.
  • Act as Quality Assurance Representative.  Monitor and evaluate department’s QI plan.  Identify opportunities for improvement.  Implement the quality system improvement process.  Participate in quality improvement teams and communicate improvement activities to the organization.
  • Standardize laboratory solutions and develop reagents used in diagnostic work.
  • Provide technical guidance and instruction to personnel in routine and advanced laboratory techniques. Conduct, in coordination with senior tech, formal training programs and workshops for medical technology students, faculty, staff, and other interested personnel as needed.
  • Monitor performance of Optilite and DSX instrument.  Train employees on Optilite and DSX and assess competency as needed.
  • Prepare reports and analyses setting forth progress, adverse trends and appropriate recommendations or conclusions.
  • Participate in various personnel actions including, but not limited to, hiring, orientation, training and performance appraisals (360 peer and management reviews).
  • Participate in review of supply usage to minimize waste.
  • Monitor Quality Control, Quality Assurance, and external proficiency, Safety, and Inspection Control practices to assure compliance with internal and external regulations.
  • Monitor and analyze all quality control reports.  Change control lot numbers in the laboratory computer system, as needed.  Print monthly Levy Jennings charts for each assay for review by Technical Supervisor.
  • Review the Beaker WAR report to detect errors in reporting as needed.  Check abnormal results with patient diagnosis to determine if results and diagnosis are consistent. Keep error log to monitor this process. Make changes in computer and notify doctors through email. 
  • Check pending list for samples that are ordered but not received in laboratory as needed. 
  • Review Outstanding List daily as needed.  Investigate delinquent specimens.  Notify doctor if specimen is to be more than one week late from the expected turnaround time.
  • Utilize various laboratory and hospital information systems and software.  Liaison between laboratory and laboratory information system.  Perform bi-annual system validation.
  • Administer and coordinate the document control system (SoftTech) for the Immunology Laboratory.  Update procedures, monitor annual reviews and approval of procedures.  Inform employees of procedural changes.
  • Communicate in a professional and courteous manner with medical personnel as necessary to obtain information for laboratory records, explain procedures, clarify orders and communicate status.
  • Address customer issues in a timely manner to include resolution and documentation.
  • Interact courteously with doctors, nurses and health unit coordinators (HUC) and other healthcare providers when answering questions or providing other information about a patient’s results.
  • Help coordinate participation for lab inspections and work with inspectors.  Participate in mock inspections.
  • Comply with department training competencies (i.e. safety and continuing education) and perform proficiency testing, as required.
  • Provide advanced problem solving, troubleshooting, interpretation/consultation, verification of specimen quality and testing results as needed.  Communicate problems/issues to responsible individuals.
  • May act as a person in charge (PIC) as well as a resource person as per guidelines determined by laboratory management.
  • Perform related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology or related field


Three to five years of laboratory experience required to gain specific knowledge of routine and specialized procedures and tests in specified area of specialty (e.g., Serology, Special Hematology, Anaerobic Bacteriology).

Degrees, Licensures, Certifications

Certification in Medical Technology by a nationally recognized agency/board and/or in the specialized field of the assigned Lab. Assignment in Transfusion Service requires certification as Specialist in Blood Banking (SBB).
