Job Description
The Assistant Director of Human Resources is a member of a team of experienced professionals who manage and coordinate the strategic role of HR at the Fuqua School of Business including recruitment, hiring, on-boarding and departure of employees, classification and salary analysis, interpretation of personnel policies and employee relation issues.  The Assistant Director is responsible for collaborating with management and staff at all levels to ensure that HR needs and priorities are executed well.   Fuqua has more than 270 staff in various departments. Additionally, the school has activity around the world with employees located in other regions. This position reports to the Director of Human Resources at the Fuqua School of Business.  

Job Responsibilities:
Manage the strategic recruitment, hiring and on-boarding processes coordinating with various constituencies at Fuqua and Duke.  Coordinate the vacancy management process, opening and posting positions, writing ads, screening and interviewing applicants, providing guidance on selection and placement of employees in positions to achieve business objectives, ensure departmental compliance with EEO and other applicable requirements. In coordination with the director, responsible for recommending hiring salaries in conjunction with budgetary guidelines, experience of candidates, and internal equity. 
 
Advise on pay issues, affirmative action requirements, classification issues, performance appraisal, employee relations and employee training and development issues.  Maintain liaison with Duke Human Resources, the Provost’s office, Payroll and other appropriate offices and departments to respond to personnel issues, special requests and to facilitate personnel actions. 
Along with the Director, review and screen all departmental requests for new positions and reclassifications to determine appropriateness of submission.  Advise management on departmental organization; coordinate justification of requests with Duke’s Rewards and Recognition office. 
 
Interpret personnel policy intent and/or acceptable management practices to ensure fair and consistent application of University and/or Fuqua policy; develop departmental policies in accordance with established University policy. 
 
Counsel staff in the handling of employee relations issues, complaints and/or grievances and determination of appropriate disciplinary actions.
 
Assess departmental professional development needs and advise as appropriate.
 
Manage, analyze and provide reporting on HR and training budgets and hiring and promotion metrics. 
 
Manage FMLA and Leave of Absence processes and communication.
 
Project Management and staff appreciation and recognition event planning throughout the year. 
 
Understand and provide back up to the student payroll function at Fuqua which has over 600 students during the academic year. 

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Prefer five years human resources experience in sourcing, recruiting, interviewing, hiring and onboarding necessary to manage personnel activities preferred
  • Demonstrated experience dealing with sensitive personnel issues and maintaining confidential information.
  • Effective problem-solver with the ability to work effectively under pressure, meet deadlines and exercise sound judgment and discretion.  
  • Successful project management experience, including meeting numerous deadlines and objectives and managing multiple projects. 
  • Ability to work and communicate well with staff, students, faculty, Fuqua administrators and University offices.  
  • Outstanding organizational skills. 
  • Refined written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong initiative and work ethic in a fast-paced, results-oriented team environment.
  • Creativity, adaptability and diplomatic skills. 
  • Proficiency with all Microsoft Office products (Windows, Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Access) and willingness and ability to master proprietary database as well as other computer software needed to perform job requirements.
