Job Summary
Senior executive who is responsible for the financial planning, analyses, and management of the Duke Cancer Institute [DCI].  Direct reports include the financial analysts for DCI operations. Matrixed relationships are maintained with department and divisional business managers and hospital financial analysts.  The Director is the architect of financial reports and models to support the DCI as a blended School of Medicine [SoM] and Duke University Health System [DUHS] operation.

Primary Responsibilities
Designs, implements, and evaluates reporting and forecasting models needed to support the mission of the DCI.  This includes developing novel methods for measuring and projecting financial performance of a blended clinical and academic organization.

Create models and reports that measure returns on investments and provide information for DCI, the SoM and DUHS senior executives’ decision-making.

Provide analyses and expertise to drive sustainable business models for the academic, research and clinical operations of the DCI.

Provide leadership in the development, implementation, and management of financial systems and financial policies and procedures as appropriate.

Directs and coordinates budget preparation for the academic operations of the DCI.  This includes consulting with senior SoM and DUHS finance executives to determine policies, guidelines, and program changes.
Maintains interface with departments, centers, other institutes and DUHS to ensure compliance with established budgets and operational plans, to investigate variances and recommend solutions, and to develop long-range financial plans.

Direct the financial analysis of major programs, new initiatives, and capital projects.  Provide recommendations to DCI senior executives regarding investments. 

Provide information to various professional and University organizations or staff concerning fiscal operations.
Coordinate the compilation and preparation of operational and financial reports and analyses setting forth progress, adverse trends and appropriate recommendations. 

Provide recommendations to DCI senior executives regarding financial terms and impacts with Memos of Understanding [MOUs] service contracts and/or professional services agreements.

Direct various departmental personnel actions including, but not limited to, hiring, performance appraisal, promotions, transfers and vacation schedules. 

Contribute to building a work culture based on teamwork, open communication, prudent risk taking, innovation, mentoring, and accountability.

Responsible for the management of the DCI physical space allocation and reporting.

Work requires a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Hospital Administration, Accounting or a closely related field.


Work requires a minimum of nine years progressively responsible experience in administrative management, to include proficiency in budgeting, grants and contracts, personnel supervision and space and facilities management. A Master's degree in Business Administration, Hospital Administration, Accounting or a closely related field may substitute for two years of required experience. OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

A CPA certification, academic medical center experience and oncology experience is preferred.
