Job Description
Occupational Summary:

Perform a variety of duties of a complex and confidential nature involving the collection, interpretation, analysis and documentation of biographical and financial data on prospective donors, including alumni, patients and organizations in support of Duke Health Development and Alumni Affairs (DHDAA) fundraising goals. This position reports directly to the Assistant Director, Research and Constituency Development.
 
Work Performed: 

Prospect Identification and Research - 65%
  • Design innovative methods to identify new prospects for Duke Health by proactively gathering, interpreting, and analyzing biographical and financial data on current and potential donors. 
  • Conduct research to prioritize gift officers’ work. Assess donor interest in various programs across Duke Health, including the School of Medicine, School of Nursing and Health System. Develop written reports and determine gift capacity ratings using various research tools, such as specialized subscription databases, print publications and Internet research. 
  • Respond to inquiries for prospect information from Duke Health Development staff in a timely, accurate manner. 
  • Coordinate, write, and prepare materials in a variety of written formats including reports, summaries and abstracts for events, site visits, and one-on-one meetings for Duke Health leadership, including the Chancellor, the President of Duke University Hospital, the Executive Vice President of Duke University Health System, the Deans, the Vice President of Duke Health Development and Alumni Affairs (DHDAA), Directors, Department Chairs, and Faculty as assigned. 
  • Establish and process daily news alerts on Duke Health alumni, prospects and potential donors, including alumni and donor obituaries. Notify appropriate staff, update electronic files, the Duke Alumni and Development Database (DADD) and the Grateful Patient database
Data Reporting and Maintenance – 15%
  • Coordinate with the Assistant Director on the preparation and distribution of reports and other donor-related material to development officers. 
  • Design, execute and distribute regularly scheduled and requested biographical and gift queries and reports from the Duke Alumni and Development Database (DADD) and from the Grateful Patient database. Present data in clearly understood reports with appropriate notes and documentation.
  • Maintain current and accurate biographical and prospect information in DADD and the Grateful Patient database by editing biographical data and forwarding other updates, such as obituaries, to Alumni Donor Records.
  • Maintain Access database to log and report current status of all research requests and project assignments.
  • Update HIPAA coding in DADD and the Duke University Health System patient information system, Maestro.
 Build Strategic Partnerships – 20%
  • Provide strategic recommendations regarding cultivation and solicitation of prospects, and donor stewardship. Meet with gift officers to determine the philanthropic priorities of the faculty and departments they support and ensure existing research procedures facilitate the movement of donors and prospects through the prospect management pipeline. 
  • Consult with University Development, especially Prospect Research, Management and Analytics, to ensure alignment with university-wide policies, and Alumni Donor Records on maintenance of accurate alumni/donor data. 
  • Initiate conversations with peer schools and programs to benchmark best practices for prospect development.

Minimum Requirements 
 
 
EDUCATION/TRAINING
 
Work requires the ability to independently conduct research, collect and summarize accurate information, and prepare written reports, generally acquired through completion of a bachelor's degree.
 
EXPERIENCE
 
Work requires one year of experience in development research or a related field with electronic research, analysis and report writing experience.
 
OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
 
 
SKILLS
 
Excellent electronic research and report writing skills
 
Experience using specialized search tools such as Lexis-Nexis and WealthEngine preferred
 
Strong experience using Microsoft Office software, especially Word and Excel
 
Strong analytical skills
 
Knowledge and familiarity with development, research and prospect management practices
 
Ability to work independently and meet deadlines with a strong work ethic
 
Experience constructing and executing database queries
 
Excellent customer service attitude
 
Accuracy and attention to detail
 
Ability to work with a variety of people
