Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business has become one of the world’s leading business schools in a relatively short period of time compared to our peers. We are globally-minded, collaborators and believe business can change the world for the better.   
We are looking for a new member for our public relations team who will make our stories stand out in today’s cluttered social and traditional media environment. The team member will work with a faculty ranked the best in the world by Bloomberg Businessweek to help identify research of interest to the media and the public. This is a position for an enterprising writer who knows how to translate a complex concept into simple terms. The position will report to Fuqua’s public relations director and be part of a dynamic team that includes a dedicated social media manager. This is a position for a storyteller and an amplifier. The right candidate will not only tell the story, but develop the best strategy for amplification through media relations, social media and digital channels. The candidate will also help faculty members build their personal brands as appropriate to ensure additional amplification.
Major Responsibilities

  • Identify interesting and relevant stories and tell them on a variety of platforms, including Fuqua’s website, social media channels and electronic newsletter  

  • Work with faculty to identify and promote research of interest, including promotion of the quarterly Duke Global Business Outlook Survey and the biannual CMO Survey.

  • Amplify faculty work and expertise through traditional media, social and digital tactics

  • Help faculty build personal brands as appropriate 

  • Serve as one of the primary Fuqua media contacts and proactively develop relationships to help promote faculty research.

  • Work closely with Duke’s Office of News and Communications and other communicators across campus.

  • Publish stories using the school’s content management system.

  • Perform other communications duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:  Work requires the ability to perform creative writing and related activities such as conducting interviews and research, and copy editing normally acquired through attainment of a bachelor's degree in Journalism, English or a related discipline.

Experience:  Work requires two years of directly related writing experience. Prefer a minimum of 5 years working in journalism, public relations, communications or media relations. OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE


  • Demonstrated strong writing and editing skills

  • Demonstrated news judgment

  • Demonstrated ability to identify enterprise stories

  • Self-starter with the ability to manage multiple projects at once

  • Demonstrated attention to detail and commitment to accuracy

  • Demonstrated knowledge and interest in social media

  • Strong interpersonal communication skills: mature judgment, high ethical standards, willingness to learn and innovate, political acumen, tact, confidentiality and diplomacy in handling various matters
