Job Description
This position will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the department of Specimen Processing of the DUH Central Automated Lab (DCAL). The specimen processing department receives incoming lab samples from Duke Hospital, Duke Regional Hospital, Duke Raleigh Hospital, hospital based clinics as well as Duke Primary Care and outreach. This will be a bench-level supervisor position i.e. may cover a work area as schedule requires.

Occ Summary
Supervise the work of subordinate personnel in performing routing and specialized blood drawing techniques from patients for laboratory procedures used in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases.

Work Performed 
  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work employees.
  • Supervise and coordinate the technical activities of subordinate personnel. schedules. described herein. 
  • Supervise and participate in the more complex technical procedures within functional area.
  • Confer with patients to obtain information for laboratory records, explain procedures, allay fears and elicit cooperation.
  • Provide technical assistance, instruction and consultation to students and Participate in the development of new collection procedures and techniques for laboratory specimens.
  • Evaluate collection equipment, techniques and work flow patterns and prepare reports outlining appropriate recommendations and conclusions.
  • Recommend various personnel actions including, but not limited to, hiring, performance appraisals, promotions, transfers and vacation
