GENERAL DESCRIPTION


The Orthopaedic Technologist is a trained member of the orthopaedic team who works with all associated health care professionals in delivering patient care and assuming appropriate responsibilities concerning all orthopaedic procedures

Duties
1. Assist physicians and nursing personnel with orthopaedic casting procedures to include the application and removal of a variety of casts and splints. Assist with routine examination and treatment procedures to include removing casts, cleaning wounds and applying dressings.
2. Under the direction of a physician, assistsin the clinical care of patients, including application of mobilization or immobilization devices. Assist with routine examination and treatment procedures to include removing casts, cleaning wounds and applying dressings. Taking necessary patient measurements (grip strength, leg length, extremity girth, etc.)
3. Application of braces, prosthetics, orthotics, and orthoses. Fitting and adjustment of canes, crutches, and walkers. Removal or adjustment of external fixators, halos, and orthopaedic frames. Preparation and set-up for specific types of traction, making adjustments as necessary.
4. Fabricating splints for various conditions – wound care, removal of wound closure materials (staples, sutures and percutaneous pins) and the application and removal of sterile and nonsterile dressings. Assisting the physician in the reduction of fractures and dislocations.
5. Recording the patient’s blood pressure, pulse, height and weight in EPIC. Assist in the maintenance of patient documentation as directed by physician and nursing personnel. Participate in the development of plan of care, including short and long term goals.
6. Assist with the development of appropriate educational materials, using evidence based information. Instruct patients on various aspects, including cast care, wound care, edema, and how to apply and remove splints.
7. Facilitate clinic flow and assist physicians and nursing personnel with coordination of patient care.
8. Maintain work area in clean and orderly condition. Set up and prepare examination rooms. Set up instruments and equipment for specific procedures.
9. Clean and sterilize a variety of medical supplies, and maintain appropriate inventory of orthopaedic supplies and equipment.
10. Perform other related duties as directed.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Ability to articulate descriptions of orthopaedic conditions based upon a basic understanding of anatomical structures and their relationship with one another.
  • Understanding of theory and application of manual, skin and skeletal traction.
  • Understanding of the proper application of aseptic techniques in dressing change and in setting up for sterile clinical procedures.
  • Ability to articulate the role of an Orthopaedic Technologist to the general public.
  • Demonstrated commitment to quality assurance and quality patient care.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS/ PREFERENCES 
High School Diploma / GED required 
Course work in Anatomy and Physiology preferred

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS/ PREFERENCES
Casting experience and 2 years orthopaedic experience preferred

LICENSURE/ CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
Ortho Tech Certification preferred but not required

WORKING CONDITIONS
  • Must be able to work under time pressures in a busy clinic/office environment.
  • Must be present on site for 8 hour shifts during standard business hours.
  • Must participate in group activities requiring interpersonal skills & cooperation.
  • Must work as late person when scheduled or according to business needs
  • Must be able to react quickly and immediately respond to emergencies.

Education

High school graduate or equivalent.Graduate of an accredited Orthopaedic Technology program preferred. Military corpsman with training in military orthopaedics preferred.

Experience

Two years of experience in a hospital, clinic, office, or military setting, working directly in the treatment of orthopaedic patients.
