Occupational Summary

The senior public relations specialist is a senior member of a team that plans and creates content and builds the audience for Faith & Leadership. The position requires experience as a storyteller and writing coach who can care for relationships with our contributors while offering detailed, critical and strategic feedback so the content aligns with our overall educational mission and serves audience needs. Faith & Leadership is the online magazine of Leadership Education at Duke Divinity, which designs educational services, develops intellectual resources, offers grants and facilitates networks of institutions. Leadership Education’s mission is to create lasting change by strengthening the ecology of Christian institutions that enable U.S. congregations and pastors to flourish. The audience includes those institutions whose mission is the formation of Christians and who have the strength to have scalable impact: denominations, seminaries, church-related colleges, consultancies, large membership congregations and Christian non-profit organizations.

Work Performed
  • Research, assign, guide, evaluate and edit content from freelance writers, including journalists, pastors, scholars, executives and others, writing from a variety of experiences and on a variety of topics.
  • Research, conduct and edit interviews with leaders from a variety of fields.
  • Develop other forms of content, including sermons and book excerpts.
  • Coordinate editorial/educational initiatives as assigned, including developing podcasts and curriculum materials, reviewing grant proposals and producing marketing materials.
  • Assign photography, videography and other material as needed for effective online storytelling.
  • Participate in ongoing processes that ensure high quality of all editorial content, including working with a copy editor, posting and proofing content in the Drupal content management system, and proofing newsletters and other materials.
  • Work with program directors, senior leaders, funders and members of the audience to develop editorial content that is educational and contributes to Leadership Education at Duke Divinity’s educational mission and priorities.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with key constituents assigned by the senior director of communications.
  • Share with colleagues how constituents describe the challenges they face, suggest content to respond and referconstituents to programs.
  • Read widely and regularly to develop and maintain an understanding of the Christian institutional leadership landscape in the United States.
  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
