Job Description
The Registrar/ Data Manager (RDM) serves as a member of the animal management and research departments. The RDM’s responsibilities include managing the institution’s animal records and related policies, validating the quality of recorded data, ensuring the legal compliance of all animal transactions as well as designing, implementing and maintaining data bases for the DLC and provides regular summary reports and statistics to various departments. The RDM also serves as liaison to relevant government agencies, other zoological institutions and conservation organizations, including Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), specific to the role of the Registrar function.


  • Manage and maintain both active and inactive animal records systems ensuring data quality, appropriate retention, preservation and accessibility
  • Manage and monitoranimal transactions and coordinates all logistics (loan agreements, booking flights, kennel prep, etc.) with curatorial staff to ensure legal compliance with local, state, federal and international laws, government regulations and industry-specific standards
  • Perform all duties associated with the acquisition and management of local, Federal and state wildlife permits and licenses; includes filing all required reports in a timely manner with Duke and government agencies.
  • Primary liaison between the institution and government agencies, Species 360, and AZA conservation programs, providing each with accurate collection information as required
  • Recommend and establish animal records management programs to ensure best practices for records retention, disposition and preservation and related systems management; trains staff on proper record keeping and ZIMSentry.
Data Manager:
  • Design, implement and maintain data bases for the Duke Lemur Center (DLC) to include animal information, research activity, biological sample and behavioral data bases.
  • Establish and maintain an index to all DLC data and provide information to users regarding location and accessibility of data; fulfill requests for and creation of specific data types to all DLC departments and researchers.
  • Provide and design tools to assist in the management of the database environment; assist in training staff in effective utilization of databases; provide data warehousing.
  • Assist in developing methodology for the ongoing assessment of database performance; identify and resolve conflicts arising over the creation, control and use of data; developand enforce database use guidelines.
  • Provide support to the DLC Director and other DLC staff in preparing grant proposals by providing summaries of past achievements and activities and projecting future growth using database output and statistical analyses
  • Create, modify and enhance SAS, Access or similar database reporting by importing and exporting data, running reports, updating data tables, and creating queries.
  • Create and update information stored in primary and secondary sources; oversee the migration of all paper records into electronic format.
