Description of Work

Licensed Practical Nurse


Broughton Hospital is currently accepting applications for multiple Licensed Practical Nurse positions on 1st and 2nd shift.  The primary purpose of the Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) is to prepare and administer medication for assigned shift, as well as ensure the medication room is in compliance with clinical standards of practice relating to storage and maintenance of medications. The LPN also assists the Registered Nurse (RN) with patient/family education/teaching, treatments and discharge planning/teaching during the patient's hospital stay.

The LPN is responsible for performing a variety of skilled health care activities for patients and carries out structured interventions based on the comprehensive plan of care. Work involves direct patient care contact on an assigned shift to ensure individual patient needs are met and is performed under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse.  LPN must have a valid license or graduating practical nurse with pending license. Psychiatric nursing experience preferred.  American Sign Language (ASL) experience is valuable.
 
The regular working schedule is Monday - Friday, and every other weekend.  This position is designated Mandatory and must report or stay over during adverse weather events.  The following shifts and pay additions are offered:

1st Shift:              7:00am–3:30pm                             10% Weekend Only
2nd Shift:             3:00pm–11:30pm                           20% Weekday & 30% Weekend

Broughton Hospital operates 297 beds and is one of the three regional psychiatric hospitals with statutory responsibility for operating as part of the Division of State Operated Healthcare Facilities (DSOHF).  With the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, we provide help and support to North Carolinians, and their families, experiencing mental illness.  Our hospital serves the western thirty-seven (37) counties of North Carolina, as part of the state's system of care and treatment for persons with mental illness.

Salary Grade GN08 ; Recruitment Range $33,960.00 - $57,493.00

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Technical Knowledge: Proven knowledge of the 6 rights to medication administration.  Documented understanding of the uses, contraindications, side effects, and how to access information regarding medications.

Consulting/Advising: Illustrated ability to provide feedback and guidance/counsel to nursing staff on care rendered to patients.

Client/Customer Service: Proven ability to use interview techniques that assist the patient in describing his/her symptoms and assist in discerning the situation, using a systems approach.  Demonstrated ability to document subjective and objective data, actions taken, and plan of care.

Communication: Documented ability to communicate with patients and families verbally, in writing, and by demonstration.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Licensed to practice as a Practical Nurse in the state of North Carolina.

Degrees must be from appropriately accredited colleges or universities.
