Description

Stevens Nature Center within the Hemlock Bluffs Nature Preserve is seeking to hire for the position of Park Attendant I.  This is a temporary, part-time position, working between 15 to 20 hours per week. Work schedules will include weekdays, weekends, evenings and some holidays.

The Park Attendant will research, plan, create, implement and evaluate nature programs for children and families. Developing the topic, theme and information to include in the delivery of the program, as well as visual aids, crafts and outdoor discovery time.

The Park Attendant will also perform routine clerical and public contact work involving entering accurate program registration data into computer, processing customer inquiries, handling general office duties, and obtaining and dispensing accurate information concerning departmental programs.

Additionally, the Attendant will perform routine operational work including the care and upkeep of facility and outdoor amenities, as well as trail patrols and the completion of daily and weekly checklists.  Performs general natural resource work including trail maintenance, garden upkeep and composting.  

Work is performed under regular supervision of the Program Specialist - Environmental. 
 

Typical Tasks

Serves as receptionist, answers telephone, receives citizen complaints and inquiries, and requests for services and provides department information and materials to citizens, or refers to appropriate person;

Operates standard office machines, including copy machine and computer; computer work may be extensive;

Registers the public for classes;

Coordinates information about classes with other  instructors including enrollment and class status;

Serves as instructor for several classes a month and interacts with class participants and parents directly;

Follows through on class cancelations including calling students;

Maintains customer files;

Enters and retrieves information to update records, process transactions, or responds to requests for information;

Assists with registration/POS data entry into CLASS as requested;

Enforces Town of Cary policies and preserve rules and regulations;

Gathers mail daily, handles recycling, cleans bird baths, refills doggie bags and water, stocks trail and informational brochures;

Performs basic accounting for money received through the cash register; prepares accurate deposits within established deadlines;

Opens or/or closes and secures center/preserve daily;

Follows up with supervisor with oral and written reports;

Provides routine information on rules and regulations, departmental policies, procedures and services;

Handles special projects;

Performs light maintenance and general cleaning;

Patrols trails to ensure safety of trails and of visitors;

Supervises nature center reception desk and interacts with visitors;

Performs administrative tasks as needed;

Prepares for and conducts nature programming;

Performs computer related tasks;

Enforces Town of Cary and park-specific rules and policies;

Provides routine information on departmental policies, procedures and services;

Performs other job-related tasks as required.
 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of piedmont flora and fauna, and the ability to provide accurate information about local wildlife; ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing; ability to speak in front of groups; ability to work independently on assigned projects and programs; good time management skills; ability to take the initiative when necessary; ability to respond calmly to an emergency situation; ability to complete assignments accurately and prior to the established deadline; skill in the operation of common office equipment; ability to meet the public effectively; ability to communicate effectively; ability to deal with the public in a firm but tactful manner; ability to maintain and establish effective working relationships with others; ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions; ability to acquire knowledge of policies, procedures and services of the center and preserve, division and department; ability to maintain filing systems.

Must be able to lift and carry up to 25 lbs on a regular, recurring basis; and as much as 40 lbs occasionally, such as bags of soil, logs/lumber, water coolers and related equipment and supplies. Work involves extensive stair climbing on the Hemlock Bluffs nature trails and the ability to walk on uneven surfaces.
 

Minimum and Preferred Qualifications

***MUST BE AT LEAST 18 YEARS OF AGE***

Requires High School Diploma (or equivalent) with general clerical and public contact experience;

Requires a valid North Carolina driver's license acceptable driving record;

Requires some experience with standard office procedures, such as answering phones, using common office equipment such as copiers or computers;

Prefers some background in natural resources or natural sciences; public speaking courses and/or experience.  Prefer knowledge of environmental education methods.  Experience working with children also preferred;Some experience with children preferred, and some experience with recreational programming.

Prefers some experience in handling money transactions;

Prefer CPR/First Aid certification or the ability to obtain certification upon hire;

Requires drug testing and background check (which may include criminal check, education verification and credit history review) prior to employment.
