Location:Public Works, Chapel Hill, North Carolina
 
The purpose of this position is to perform construction and maintenance work in support of the goals and mission of the Construction, Storm water, or Streets Programs.

 Essential Functions:
  • Performs streets, construction, and storm water maintenance and improvement activities
  • Operates and maintains equipment and hand tools
  • Assists with inclement weather and special event response
  • Performs other duties as required
     
SUPERVISION EXCERCISED
This position occasionally directs other employees.
 
 
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The work is typically performed while standing, walking, bending, crouching, climbing, or stooping; occasionally lifting heavy objects; and using equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity.  
 
 
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work is typically performed in the field with exposure to inclement weather, traffic, insects, noxious vegetation, dust, vibration, noise, and fumes.
 

 
 Minimum Qualifications:

KNOWLEDGE OF:
  • Skilled construction methods and practices
  • Basic concrete sidewalk and curb construction methods and practices (Construction Division)
  • Asphalt patching, leaf collection and roadway construction maintenance(Streets Division)
  • Familiarity with street maintenance equipment (Streets Division)

ABILITY TO:
  • Communicate effectively (orally and in writing)
  • Perform skilled tasks; operate various equipment related to the program
  • Perform preventive maintenance on equipment; and perform street and storm water system construction and maintenance activities
  • Model behaviors that are consistent with our values of RESPECT
  • Work a flexible schedule including holidays, weekends and inclement weather on an as needed basis
EDUCATION
High school diploma or equivalency or a combination or education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties

EXPERIENCE
Three years of job related experience

CERTIFICATION
Possession of or ability to readily obtain a minimum of a Class B CDL issued by the State of North Carolina, Successful completion or ability to readily obtain the Competent Person Certification in Shoring and Trenching or Confined Space Rescue
