CURRENTLY ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS:  The Town of Chapel Hill  has an ongoing need for  part- time aquatic instructors.    Please submit an application for consideration.  We contact qualified applicants when positions open up.  Applications remain on file for a minimum of six months from date of submission.     We offer good working conditions and schedule flexibility.     

 This position is responsible for leading and teaching participants to learn how to swim to the best of their abilities.
 Essential Functions:
  • Implements program(s) or class(es) planned for participants
  • Instructs participants for entire duration of class
  • Records class attendance at the beginning of each class session
  • Maintains enthusiasm and tact in all contact with the public, program participants, participants' parents and other staff
  • Teach a group of individuals in a variety of teaching styles; such as visually as well as verbally and to individualize teaching to the needs of each student
  • When appropriate, provides information and feedback to parents and participants
  • Sets up and cleans up materials and equipment for each class
  • Carries out job duties in a safe manner in accordance with all Town, department and regulatory policies; follows safety procedures. Identifies unsafe situations and work hazards, corrects them if possible, and reports them to their supervisor
  • Records any incident or accident on the appropriate form(s), submitted in a timely fashion
  • Distributes and collects program evaluations at the end of class sessions
Performs other duties as assigned
 Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be at least 16 years of age at the time of employment
Knowledge of:
• Principles, techniques, and materials associated with teaching in a particular program for people of a particular age or ability level
• Current techniques, equipment and materials associated with the subject matter to be taught
• The appropriate rules and equipment for the subject matter at hand, including ability to problem solve, for situations associated with class or activity

Ability to:
•   Teach a group of individuals, using knowledge of group communication and time management
•    Understand and follow written and oral instructions
•     Read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent
•   Model behaviors that are consistent with our values of RESPECT
  • Ability to obtain Water Safety Instructor certification within 6 months of hire

  • Experience sufficient to understand the work with particular age or population, usually associated with at least 6 months previous teaching experience, three years of swim team experience or Water Safety Instructor certification (or equivalent).
  • Demonstrated ability, aptitude & orientation toward instructing particular classes and particular populations
